For all of you who’ve been reading this newsletter for some time, you know about Retrieval, a short film that I wrote & directed & starred in that means so much to me.
If you are in LA, we’re going to be doing a screening of Retrieval and of my friend Vincent’s web series Finesse ! This is an exclusive invite (we’re not sharing publicly on social media, etc), so I hope that you all can join us if you’re in LA! You just need to RSVP to the email addy listed at the end of this letter!
We’re excited for you to join us for a screening of Fatimah Asghar’s RETRIEVAL + Vincent Martell’s FINESSE with a Q&A with Jamila Woods and both filmmakers on Saturday, August 27th 2022 At RAY KURTZMAN THEATER AT CAA, 2000 AVENUE OF THE STARS LOS ANGELES.
.
What to expect:
In order to do our best to maintain COVID safety, we ask you to wear your masks in the cinema.
This is an intimate space and seating will be limited so early arrival is suggested if you’d like to ensure a seat
Due to the graphic nature of both productions, we discourage and may refuse late attendees to avoid interrupting our more sensitive scenes.
About the works:
RETRIEVAL follows the process of a soul retrieval, the red-clad woman going back in time to retrieve part of herself from where it had been severed, to rewrite a memory of something painful that had happened to her. It uses fantastical and realistic elements to conduct a healing process for the characters and viewers. Holding the line between magic, fantasy, and grounded reality, the film asks the question: what sight of miraculous intervention do we need to conduct to seam together such a violent rupture?
Runtime: 17 minutes
FINESSE examines the line between sexuality and sensuality, fantasy and reality, and the never-ending search for intimacy between three roommates in Chicago. Starring Jarren Merell (Shea Couleé), Jeez Loueez, and Vincent Martell, FINESSE is a colorful adventure centered around the hustle of a chosen family of black artists. In FINESSE, we see black people in control of their bodies. It's a world that acknowledges that the abundance of black queer intimacy can and will be used as a revolutionary tool in storytelling.
